A  day  at  Buckingham  Palace

July
2025

This June, Shantell Martin was honoured with an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her contributions to the Arts and Charity. The award was presented by The Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace, marking a deeply meaningful moment in Shantell’s creative journey.

Having left London in 2003 to live and work abroad—first in Japan, then the United States—Shantell’s return to her hometown for this recognition felt like a full-circle moment. Over the years, her work has spanned drawing, performance, design, technology, education, and social impact, often created in collaboration with schools, nonprofits, and grassroots organisations around the world.

“As an independent artist, so much of what I do is about showing up, giving back, and creating connection,” she shared. “To receive this recognition, especially from home, is incredibly humbling.”

For the occasion, Shantell was dressed by renowned designer Ozwald Boateng and wore jewellery by Hirsh London, both longstanding inspirations in the world of design

The honour not only marks a personal milestone but also shines a light on the value of service-driven creative work and the power of art to shape culture and community.
