The May Room was the final installation in a series of works by Shantell Martin on Governors Island, commissioned by the Trust for Governors Island’s 2019 Public Art Commission. It welcomed the public inside the building for the first time in 20 years.
Expanding on the exterior of the former military chapel, originally built during World War II as Our Lady Star of the Sea, a Roman Catholic chapel serving U.S. Army members stationed on the base. The May Room reimagined the space as a site for reflection, meditation, and community.
The installation was open on weekends through the end of the Island’s 2019 season and also hosted a number of free public programs, including a series of readings presented by the Poetry Society of America and featuring poets from national organizations such as Kundiman and CantoMundo.
