Shantell Martin’s premiere ballet, and her premiere as a choreographer, takes on new heights in “Kites,” her Boston Ballet’s ChoreograpHER debut. Celebrating innovative women across creative fields, Boston Ballet’s ChoreograpHER is a female-led program including choreography, music, design, and visual art. 

“Kites" is a celebration and exploration of memory, movement, creativity, and of collaboration. It is a journey from dark to light, from unknowing to knowing, from the ground to the air. It draws from the object that is the Kite, both metaphorically and physically speaking (getting us from the ground to the air and back again).” - Shantell Martin

In addition to Martin, the Boston Ballet program will feature five world premieres by NYCB Principal Dancer Tiler Peck, Choreographer Claudia Schreier, Boston Ballet Principal Dancer Lia Cirio, and Choreographer Melissa Toogood.

Intimately involved in the process from conception to fruition, Martin designed a variety of custom features to highlight the dancers and ballet, from the lighting to stage and sound design. Martin worked closely with the costume department to create costumes to feel light, free, and comfortable, expanding on her philosophy that creativity can bring oneself closer to the Truth. Additionally, Martin created original artwork inspired by the idea that the dancers themselves would bring the color to her iconic black and white lines for which she is internationally known.
