Get  Outside:  A  New  Public  Artwork  in  Union  Square

July
2026

Shantell Martin’s large-scale public artwork Get Outside is now on view in New York City’s Union Square.

Spanning approximately 7,500 square feet along the 14th Street Busway between Broadway and University Place, the street mural was created as part of Union Square Partnership’s annual public art program in collaboration with NYC DOT Art.

Martin’s signature black-and-white linework moves across the street, punctuated by moments of color and a continuous orange thread that becomes a pathway through the composition. The work invites pedestrians to slow down, notice their surroundings, and consider the many ways we move through and connect with the city.

Rooted in Martin’s ongoing exploration of identity, space, and human connection, Get Outside brings the act of drawing into the public realm. The artwork transforms a familiar urban corridor into a shared visual experience—one encountered through walking, movement, and everyday life.

The mural was hand-painted by Colossal Media and presented with support from Merrell. It will remain on view through spring 2027.
